[ Epicanthoplasty ]
medial epicanthoplasty, upward epicanthoplasty
Duration of procedure 30 minutes |
Anesthesia local anesthesia with light sedation |
Stitch Removal 4 days After the procedure |
Recovery Period no restriction of activity |
What is Epicanthoplasty?
Some Asians typically have an epicanthic fold (also called Mongolian fold) which is the skin web between the upper eyelid to the lower eyelid hiding the inner corner of the eye opening. By removing the webbing skin, the hidden inner eye can be exposed further, making the eye bigger.

Removing the epicanthic fold (mongolian fold)
About 86.7% of Koreans typically have an epicanthic fold (also called mongolian fold) which the bit of skin from the upper eyelid that comes down over the inner corner of the eye. This fold makes the two eyes look far apart. With epicanthoplasty, the distance between your two eyes will look closer together with bigger eyes as well.
-
Hidden scar
Scar can be hidden along the double fold line or the edge of the skin fold.
Upward Epicanthoplasty
Without reducing the intercanthal distance(distance between the eyes), the epicanthal fold can be reduced in upward direction.
[ Lateral Canthotomy and canthoplasty outside further opening ]
A softer look with bigger eyes, Lateral Canthoplasty!
Duration of procedure Apprx. 30 minutes |
Anesthesia local anesthesia with light sedation |
Stitch Removal 7 Days After the Surgery |
Horizontally narrow palpebral aperture or slanted lateral canthus
For those whose has unfavorable impression due to slant-eye, the so-called 'lowering the end of eyelid’ surgery can open and correct the slanting.
Medial Epicanthoplasty
- Further eye-opening even after epicanthoplasty and blepharoplasty.
- Slanted-eye
- Insufficient sclera exposure
- Narrow intercanthal distance
After lateral canthotomy, the opening is partially closed, but most(70-80%) of the opening site remains open.
Excessive exposure may result in red conjunctival showing.
However, the scar is less visible unless the opening is adequate.
[ Lowerlid traction ]
If there is little space for lateral canthotomy, the lower lid margin can be pulled downward to exposure globe further.
Duration of procedure Apprx. 30 minutes |
Anesthesia local anesthesia with light sedation |
Stitch Removal absorbable suture |
Medial Epicanthoplasty
- Slanted eyes
- Further opening after the previous lateral canthotomy
- Insufficient exposure of the pupil in the lower margin
- To maximize the effect of the lateral canthotomy
- Excessive adhesion after the lateral canthotomy
No visible scar
There is no visible scar, because the lowerlid traction procedure is done on the conjunctival surface without skin incision
